GARDENING, NON ARCHITECTURE--the nom de rock of Sarah Saturday--has announced that she'll be joined by WE THE LIVING for the last several dates of the inaugural E.I.Y FALL TOUR 2009, which kicked off early last month with co-headliner GAVIN CASTLETON. Sponsored by the revolutionary not-for-profit website EARNITYOURSELF.COM--which supports the independent music community, allowing musicians to trade shows, book tours, upload articles and information, stream and sell music, network with other musicians, promoters, venues and fans, as well as receive personal advice from music industry veterans--Saturday and CASTLETON have booked all of the dates themselves using tools on the site, including the "Tour Planning" and "Show Trading" features. Since launching in 2006, EARNITYOURSELF.COM has blossomed into a thriving community with over nine thousand participating members and, in the last year, has averaged 100,000 pageviews a month.
WE THE LIVING will be filling in for CASTLETON on the tour's final dates, as he's seen his grassroots approach to touring--supported by EarnItYourself.com--grow to the next level by being invited to open for Taking Back Sunday on several dates. Portland, OR-based CASTLETON has built his nearly 15-year career on innovation. He released his 14-song narrative "popera" Home (Five One Inc) in February 2009, lead by single "Coffeelocks" which received regular airplay on Los Angeles' influential NPR station KCRW. On October 13, GAVIN releases a new three-song EP Random Anthems via iTunes. Single "Hope is A Drug"--currently receiving regular airplay on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic"--can be downloaded for free at http://tinyurl.com/hopeisadrug.
GARDENING, NOT ARCHITECTURE's Sarah Saturday will bring her electronic-tinged ethereal power-pop to the tour, on the heels of Southern California shows with The Pixies frontman Black Francis and Jonah Matranga's (Far, Gratitude) onelinedrawing. G, NA's first full length album First LP comes out later this month digitally and will be available physically at shows. Recorded in May of 2009 at Chris Walla's (Death Cab For Cutie) Hall of Justice studio in Portland, OR, the album features all the recorded GARDENING, NOT ARCHITECTURE songs to-date including nine new tracks.
GARDENING, NOT ARCHITECTURE is a collaboration between Sarah Saturday and producer/engineer Beau Sorenson (Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Sparklehorse) who met in 2003 and recorded what would be the first GARDENING, NOT ARCHITECTURE demos in Beau's Madison, WI apartment. Beau and Sarah rejoined forces in 2007 at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, WI to record the band's first official release: a four-song EP entitled The First EP, which was released in the form of limited edition, numbered CDs with handmade packaging.
